Cable Street 70 years on - Have the Fascists won?Written by Stephen Clarke on Tue 10th Oct 2006
Many people turned out on Sunday to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the so called "Battle of Cable Street". It would be nearer the truth to describe it as an anti-police riot. The people who turned up on Sunday however mostly believed for whatever reason that it was a major victory against fascism in Britain. Given that there are more people voting for fascist parties than ever before and that they have greater representation now than ever before I'd like to know what a defeat would look like. The greatest reason for worry about who has won though is simply the thought that New Labour is New Fascism or Fascism Rebranded for the 21st century. Fascism has historically come from the authoritarian left. Oswald Mosley was an unsuccessful contender for the leadership of the Labour Party. Mussolini started out calling himself a socialist and Hitler was the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party. I think to myself what has new labour done, well it's failed to make the trains run on time. It has however reduced our civil liberties and would have no hesitation in doing so again if it thought it could get away with it. It also uses fear to enhance it's grip, classical scare tactics of fascists. The scariest possibility of all though is the possibility that Muslims are being cast for the role given to the Jews in the 1930's admittedly New Labour has only seemed to touch the edge of this so far. They have started out by mentioning with increasing frequency phrases like "Islamic extremists" and now comments by various senior politicians about how different they all are. What will it be next? I can only hope my worst fears will never be realized. Remember that the only true opponent of fascism is a Liberal for they are the only people who truly believe in individual liberty and have no truck with collectivism of any sort.
