Statement by Leader on attack on Councillor Abdul Matin

April 9, 2009 12:44 AM

Councillor Stephanie Eaton, leader of the Liberal Democrat group of Councillors on Tower Hamlets Council released a statement today deploring the violence used in the assault on Cllr Matin.

Councillor Eaton said "This brutal and senseless beating has left me shocked and concerned. Councillor Matin is a well known public figure in Bethnal Green - and highly respected in the Weavers ward he represents. I cannot conceive of any situation where thugs could justify beating this gentle and caring man. We are all hoping that Matin will make a full recovery and be able to resume his public duties for the residents of Weavers.

The Liberal Democrats would like to thank all colleagues, friends and members of the public who have contacted us expressing outrage at these events and offering support to Matin and his family. We will do all we can to support the efforts of the Police to identify and bring to justice the people who committed this act of gratuitous violence."
