Awards ceremony celebrates children's achievements2.36.30pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 6th Jul 2006
Stepney Dynamic Youth recognised the achievements of students studying mother tongue Bengali classes with an awards ceremony at Tower Hamlets College. Local Liberal Democrat Councillor Azizur Rahman Khan who is the Chairman of the Mother Tongue School was on hand to give students their trophies and certificates.
Former Councillor Janet Ludlow and the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group Councillor Stephanie Eaton were also present to congratulate students, and pay tribute to the work of the parents and teachers. Councillor Khan commented that "It is important that children gain confidence in both English and Bengali so that they can play a full part in the economic and social life of the UK but also retain close links with the country of their heritage." The Stepney Dynamic Youth mother tongue school is supported by Tower Hamlets Council Community Language service. The service educates over 4000 young people across Tower Hamlets in 13 languages including Cantonese, Somali, Rwandan and Spanish.
