The Tower Hamlets roadshow called "People into Public Life" rolled into Idea Stores around the Borough this week. The event publicises a variety of roles in public life such as School governors, Special Constables, volunteers, Youth Parliament Member etc.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Stephanie Eaton attended the events wearing two hats, firstly as a local councillor and also as an Independent Custody Visitor (ICV). Speaking of her role as an ICV, Councillor Eaton explained that "Custody visitors make unannounced visits to Police stations and check on the welfare of the detainees. It is an important role as it provides reassurance to the local community that people held in Police custody are being treated correctly. Custody visitors ensure that the detainees have suitable food, medical treatment if it is required and access to legal advice."

The event was attended by local Special (Volunteer) Police Constables, Magistrates and attracted a great deal of interest from people using the Idea Stores.
