Bette Baunton: A Tribute

12.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 8th Aug 2006

Bette Baunton

With Bette's death on 29th July we have all lost a valued friend and colleague. Bette was committed to the people of Bow, becoming a Councillor for Park Ward in 1990 and standing down twelve years later in 2002 when her physical health prevented her from continuing.

Although suffering a great deal from arthritis, Bette never complained or allowed her ill health to get in the way of carrying out her full share of Council duties and devoting her energies to helping people. She was an example to us all and will be sorely missed.

Bette kept open house at her home in Tufnell Court and it was rare to find her alone with friends, neighbours and constituents constantly dropping in and in the intervals Bette would be on the telephone persuading someone to sort out the problems people brought to her. Even after she retired from the Council Bette still cared enough to contact colleagues with case-work on others' behalf. She was a tireless worker for local residents.

Our thoughts go to her family and friends at this time. We are proud to have known her.

There will be a memorial service at St. Paul's Church, St. Stephen's Road, Bow, E3 at 2pm on Wednesday, 16th August to which all will be welcome.

From Janet Ludlow, Ray Gipson, Marian Williams, Martin Rew, Hilary Phelps, Barrie Duffey and all other Liberal Democrat Councillors past and present.
