Old Bonner School - still standing!

After the disappointment of having the injunction against demolition lifted at the High Court on Friday, campaigners to save Old Bonner School are celebrating the Court of Appeal's decision to re-impose an interim injunction against demolition today.

Lord Justice Kay decided to grant the interim injunction preventing demolition until he can hear the arguments of the campaign team in the Court of Appeal on Tuesday morning.

The arguments hinge on whether, by accepting a petition of local residents on to the agenda for Wednesday's full council meeting, this gave the residents reasonable grounds to expect that the building would not be demolished in the meantime. Although the campaign is far from over, the backing of the Court of Appeal at least gives supporters the confidence to know that the building is safe for two more days. Liberal Democrat Leader, Stephanie Eaton, who has been supportive of the residents' actions, spoke of the commitment of the campaigners saying "If it were not for the efforts of a great many local people, this historic building would already be lost to the Borough. The residents' legal action offers some hope that the future of this building, much needed and admired in our community, can be raised in the democratic forum of the Council chamber".
