Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrats achieve road safety victory7.53.29pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 10th Nov 2006
Joint action from Tower Hamlets Liberal democrats led by Councillor Louise Alexander and Liberal Democrat London Assembly member Geoff Pope has forced Transport for London to agree to bring forward work for much needed safety measures at the Brick Lane junction with Bethnal Green Road. Transport for London and Tower Hamlets Council had been dragging their feet in organising the work to install pedestrian-friendly crossing facilities, including traffic signals, despite a massive petition organized by Councillor Alexander. A joint effort by Cllr Alexander with her fellow ward councillors, Abdul Matin, Tim O'Flaherty, local activists and Assembly member Geoff Pope forced Transport for London and the Council to get a move on. The work is now scheduled to be completed by March 2007. Louise Alexander said: "After a run of accidents including 3 recent fatalities, local people feel very strongly that urgent action is needed at this junction. Over 1,500 residents signed the petition organised by Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrats and we thank them for helping bring pressure to bear on TfL and the Council." Geoff Pope said: "Transport for London and Tower Hamlets Council should have acted much faster if installing proper pedestrian facilities at this busy junction.I am glad that a solution has been reached and that the work will start soon, but why it needed pressure from me and Councillor Alexander to force TfL and the Council to agree a start date for the works does not say much for the way either organisation approached solving this dangerous situation."
