It's a blinder!: Libdems investigate light nuisance in Shadwell10.11.35am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 16th Aug 2007
Following complaints from a number of residents of Winterton House, Liberal Democrat Councillors Louise Alexander and Stephanie Eaton have asked Environmental Health Officers to investigate the intensity and angles of floodlights shining into homes at Winterton House. Cllr Alexander said "Residents feel the brightness of these lights are affecting their health and sleeping patterns, and forcing people to spend all the Summer evenings with their curtains closed". The picture here shows the effect of floodlights from the nearby 5-a-side football pitches adjacent to Mulberry School for Girls. The lighting was investigated and adjusted in 2004, but new legislation has been introduced which provides for relief from certain types of light nuisance. Cllr Eaton commented "The residents do not want to have the football pitches closed, but hope that the lights can be angled downwards so stop the glare going into the sitting room of homes in Winterton House". Residents who have concerns about light pollution are welcome to contact Cllr Stephanie Eaton by phone on 07941 303 976 or email Stephanie.Eaton@towerhamlets.gov.uk for an informal discussion.
