Liberal Democrats express continuing concern over Crossrail disruption8.19.34pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 10th Sep 2007
Liberal Democrats in Tower Hamlets have expressed concerns over the disruption and environmental impact of the Crossrail shaft proposed at Essex Wharf which will be accessed through Trahorn Close. Following a meeting with representatives of the Lomas Street, Castlemain Street, Wodeham Gardens and Trahorn Close residents Association, Cllr Stephanie Eaton said "Crossrail has the potential to bring many benefits to London and Tower Hamlets and it is vital for the economy of the city that we invest in transport infrastructure. However, having listened to the residents, I am concerned about the impact of proposed work around the Trahorn Close area. This is a small residential community containing many families with disabled children, close to Swanlea School. The proposals require 4-5 years of construction, which will seriously impact on the lives of residents through noise, heavy vehicle traffic, dirt and loss of amenity such as play space and parking spaces." Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrats will continue to work to maximise the benefits and minimise the environmental and social damage arising from Crossrail. We have tabled an amendment to a Motion at full Council regarding Crossrail which demands that residents are consulted about changes to the environmental safeguards of the Bill (if enacted) and about future development above ground on the sites following completion of the Crossrail work.
