Lib Dems oppose post office closure plans in Tower Hamlets11.42.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 16th Oct 2007
Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrats today highlighted the likely closure of post offices across the Borough. Nearly 10,000 residents of Bethnal Green and Bow have post office card accounts, some 2,450 people collect their pension using their post office card accounts and 7,000 people use the post office to collect benefit payments. Speaking of the post office closures, Lib Dem Cllr Tim O'Flaherty said "The post office is a lifeline to many people. When you close the post office you rip the heart out of the local community.". Libdem group leader, Cllr Stephanie Eaton said "Under current government plans to close post offices that are operating in close proximity, Tower Hamlets may lose up to 10. This will cause real problems for older people and others who rely on the post office to help them manage their pensions and benefits." Formal consultation on post office closures in Tower Hamlets will happen in April 2008. Liberal Democrats will be campaigning to preserve the post offices as an essential community resource in the Borough. For information on the government's plans see the Postwatch press release dated October 2, 2007: Related Link:
