Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrats are supporting the call from the Metropolitan Police for people to hand in imitation firearms during a four week amnesty. From 21st January to 17th February the "surrender scheme" means that anyone will be able to hand in weapons at police stations in Tower Hamlets without fear of prosecution for unlawful possession.

Supporting the scheme, Tower Hamlets Council group - comprising Councillors Stephanie Eaton, Louise Alexander, Azizur Rahman Khan, Tim O'Flaherty, Abdul Matin and Rajib Ahmed will be urging people to hand in their weapons. Group Leader Cllr Stephanie Eaton said today: "People will not be asked to give their details. We hope that all Tower Hamlets residents who have a real, adapted or imitation firearm will take this chance to hand it in with no questions asked".

The two main police Stations in Tower Hamlets that are open 24 hours a day are at Limehouse and Bethnal Green.
