"Save our post offices!" say Liberal Democrats2.30.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 19th Feb 2008
At least 5 post offices in Tower Hamlets have been earmarked for closure according to a long awaited announcement by the Royal Mail. They include Post Offices in Watney Market, Devons Road, Heylyn Square, The Quarterdeck, and Whitechapel. Libdem campaigners have been on high alert for this statement from the Royal Mail which officially launches a 6 week period of 'consultation'. Councillor Tim O'Flaherty commented: "We will certainly be letting them know that we are not happy with these proposals". Councillor O'Flaherty has been leading the Liberal Democrat campaign to save local post offices. In discussion with other Liberal Democrat activists Cllr O'Flaherty said "Post Offices are integral to our community and provide essential services to local people. In a Borough as diverse as Tower Hamlets with some areas of severe economic deprivation, it is vital that local people have access to the support that a nearby post office provides. We are very concerned about the impact of these proposed closures on elderly and disabled people who will have problems getting to other post offices when these ones are closed." Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrats will be objecting to the closure programme.
