Why should civil partnerships cost more?

Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrats have today asked Council officers for an explanation of the disparity between the cost of a civil partnership ceremony and that of a civil marriage ceremony.

The Leader of the Council Group on Tower Hamlets Council, Stephanie Eaton said "I was surprised to find that it is more expensive to have a civil partnership ceremony than a civil wedding, and I am concerned that this discriminates against same sex couples entering into a civil partnership. Although the monetary difference is not great, I would be much happier if the fees were the same, and I will be pressing the Council to ensure that this discrepancy is eliminated."

At present civil marriage ceremonies at approved premises in the Borough cost:

Monday to Friday - £298.50

Saturday - £328.50

Sunday and Bank Holidays - £398.50

Civil partnership ceremonies cost:

Monday to Friday - £305.00

Saturday - £335.00

Sunday and Bank Holidays - £405.00
