Damage to Wapping War Memorial labelled a disgrace by Liberal Democrats1.40.00am GMT Mon 14th Dec 2009
Liberal Democrats in Wapping have expressed their shock and sadness at the amount of graffiti and damage to the civilian War Memorial. The memorial by Wendy Taylor CBE recognises the sacrifice of the people of East London during the blitz and is a much loved local landmark.
Speaking about the damage, Liberal Democrat Geoff Juden said: "The monument is in memory of all the East Enders who lost their lives and homes in the second world war. The dove is a fitting reminder of all that people were fighting for and suffering through during the war. It is a disgrace that some vandals have scratched their names, postcodes and gang slogans on this symbol of peace." Liberal Democrats in Tower Hamlets have started a campaign to raise money for the repair of the monument and are working with the sculptor Wendy Taylor to try and protect the monument from further damage.
